Monastic medicinal oil based on the resin of pink rockrose or Cistus incanus, made in the Monastery of the Holy Archangels. Pink rockrose is an aromatic and medicinal plant. Its resin is produced by the glandular trichomes of the plant only under adverse (high) temperatures prevailing during the summer months. The resin contains organic compounds called cistus incanus diterpenes, which according to studies exhibit antimicrobial and anti-aging properties thanks to their cytostatic activity (i.e. they prevent cell proliferation and eventually prevent aging and tumor formation).
The ancient Greeks used cistus to make incense and ointments. They attributed to the herb antirheumatic, antiseptic, astringent and healing properties, while using the fruit of the plant to make a tea that stops diarrhea. The leaves of the cistus incanus have the highest content of polyphenols than any other plant in Europe, with stunning destructive effect of free radicals. In the past, some bakers used to put cistus in their ovens in order to flavor the rusks. It is still one of the 40 components of the Holy Myron which is made every 10 years in the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
