Pious Anna and her husband Joachim spent most of their lives without children. But the Almighty God listened to the couple's prayers and granted them the birth of a child, with the promise that they would dedicate the child to Him. Quite so, Anna and Joachim, at an advanced age, had their daughter Maria. Some years later, when Maria was three years old, they took her to the Temple and handed her over to the high priest Zacharias.
