Monastic Recipes

“The monastic recipes contain lots of herbs and fruits, but no meat throughout the whole year. We strictly observe fasting. It is a simple, healthy diet, with fasting and non-fatty recipes. This is the secret that protects the athonite monks from cancer and other illnesses and gives them longevity”, says the monk of the Holy Monastery of Koutloumousiou of Mount Athos, Father Moses.

“We eat with temperance. Even in celebrations, like Easter, we do not eat meat. We eat fish. We often consume vegetables and fruits, many of which we caltivate them here", says the monk Moses. He adds that “it is important that the monks of Mount Athos, even from the fasting products, do not eat much. This is because monks generally live in simplicity. Of course, we should not forget that all year round, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, we fast and eat meals with no oil”.

The cuisine at Mount Athos is simple but very tasty and has recipes that benefit the health. The Athonite cuisine is based on vegetables, legumes and whatever the sea of Mount Athos can offer.
