The history of Theotokos of Araka begins in the area of Lagoudera, in Cyprus. There, in the Byzantine era existed a homonymous monastery, while today it is a chapel. The name Araka is a paraphrase of the word ‘Gerakas’ (falcon), as it is said that in the area where the chapel is located, a falcon had once died. When they dug at that point, they discovered an icon of the Virgin Mary, which they called Virgin Mary of Araka. More about Virgin Mary of Araka.
