Melissa Officinalis - Monastery of Assumption of Holy Mary
Its name is taken because at flowering attracts many bees. The Arabs used it against depression and tension. In Mount Athos will find it everywhere, in monasteries, cloisters and cells.
Beneficial properties: One of the most valuable herbs. It has a reputation for acting against age. It is beneficial to skin, nervous system and stomach. It has a stimulating effect on the heart and circulatory system, causing dilation of peripheral blood vessels, reducing blood pressure. It is used as an auxiliary treatment to allergies, heart palpitations, hypertension, insomnia, dysmenorrhea, dyspepsia, uric acid, febrile illnesses, flu, rheumatism and all forms of anxiety and stress.
Use: Put 1-2 teaspoons in 1 cup of boiling water for 5-10 minutes and cover it well. Drink 2-3 times a day. You can use it also, in confectionery, liquor (Benedictine) and cooking. Aromatize meat for the oven, poultry, fish, soups and salads.
In Western Europe is a popular drink called "Eau de melisse des Carmes" that made the karmelits monks in the 17th century. The recipe is as follows: put the flowers of Melissa with lemon peel, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, anise and coriander few days to soak in white wine without being exposed to the sun.
