The history of the monastery

The history of the monastery is lost in the Byzantium era, where there was a monastery dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi at that point. Osia Athanasia had lived as an ascetic in this monastery, but over the years it was abandoned.

In 1904, Saint Nektarios decided to restore the monastery and house the Holy Trinity Monastery there.

The works for the restoration of the Monastery lasted from 1904 to 1907. A year later, in 1908, Saint Nektarios left the management of the Rizarei School and retired to the Monastery.

Where Saint Nektarios lived: the house of Saint Nektarios

Saint Nektarios lived the last 12 years of his life in the monastery, from 1908 to 1920. In fact, he lived in a small house outside the boundaries of the monastery, as the monastery was for women.

The little house of Saint Nektarios is still preserved today and is open to pilgrims. There, visitors have the opportunity to see up close the personal belongings of the Saint, the place where he prayed and wrote his writings, as well as the innumerable dedications of the faithful.

The Tomb of Saint Nektarios: the shrine with the relics of the Saint

In 1908, Saint Nektarios had inaugurated the Church of the Holy Trinity. Today, next to this temple there is another temple, dedicated to Saint Nektarios. Near that point is the small church with the tomb of the Saint.

Saint Nektarios died of terminal illness in the afternoon of November 8, 1920. The Saint's body remained incorruptible for 21 whole years.

Almost 40 years later, on April 20, 1961, by Act of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, he was declared a Saint of the Orthodox Church.

Dismissal Hymn of Saint Nektarios

O faithful, let us honour Nectarios, divine servant of Christ, offspring of Silivria and guardian of Aegina, who in these latter years was manifested as the true friend of virtue. All manner of healing wells forth for those who in piety cry out, "Glory to Christ who glorified you; glory to Him who, through you, wrought wonders; glory to Him Who, through you, works healing for all.

Take away from me, O Virgin, the fetters of sin,
of my lusts and other transgressions:
the terrible carelessness and the overcaring,
the evil curiosity and the talkativeness,
the useless incontinence and the haughtiness,
the negligence, the drunkenness and the lack of mercy,
the bad desires, the terrible impurity,
the extravagance, the darkness,
the great insensitivity.
