According to the tradition, the nine white and blue stripes correspond to the syllables of the historical phrase "Liberty or Death", or the letters of the word "Liberty" (in Greek "Ελευθερία"), however there are no reliable sources to support these claims. The Cross symbolizes the prevailing religion of Greece, the Eastern Orthodox Church. The colors blue and white symbolize the colors of the Greek sky and sea.
