Saint Januarius, also known as Januarius I of Benevento, was Bishop of Naples in Italy and lived during the reign of Diocletian. Together with his companions Proculus, Sossius, Festus, Desiderius, Acutius, and Eutyches, they worked zealously for the spread of Christianity. During the persecution of Christians, they endured terrible tortures but Saint Januarius, though cast into fire, remained unharmed. Refusing to save himself, he embraced martyrdom, proclaiming: «My children let me finish the good fight of martyrdom, and I promise that I will always be the protector of your city». Following this event, he was proclaimed the patron saint and protector of Naples. Later, a widow named Maximina, with divine inspiration and fervent prayer to the saint, implored him to miraculously resurrect her only son. Her plea was granted, further establishing Saint Januarius as a powerful intercessor and wonderworker. His memory is honored on April 21.
