Brief life of Saint Longinus
Saint Longinus was a Roman centurion who was in charge of the guard at the Crucifixion of Christ and later assigned to watch over His tomb. He was not originally a man of faith, but a soldier carrying out military orders. Nevertheless, he found himself present at events that deeply impressed him and led him to see everything he witnessed in a new light. According to tradition, during the events of the Crucifixion and later the Resurrection, he was profoundly affected by what he saw and heard. He refused to participate in false reports about what had taken place and maintained his own stance, even when this put him in a difficult position. He later left Roman service and traveled to Cappadocia, where he began to speak about Christ and what he had experienced. This decision brought him into conflict with the authorities and he was eventually executed together with two other soldiers who had also come to believe. In later tradition, his name became associated with the Holy Lance, as he was believed to be the soldier who pierced the side of Christ. In this way, his figure entered Christian memory as that of a man who went from being a soldier of Rome to a martyr of faith. The Church commemorates Saint Longinus on October 16.
