Short life of Saint Artemius
Saint Artemius was one of the great martyrs of the Church, renowned for his unwavering faith and remarkable courage. From an early age, he received a Christian upbringing and became known for his wisdom, integrity, and virtuous character. His abilities earned the respect of Emperor Constantine the Great, who appointed him to a high-ranking administrative position in Egypt. There, he governed with justice and compassion while remaining steadfast in his Christian convictions. His life took a dramatic turn when Emperor Julian the Apostate came to power and launched a persecution against Christians. Saint Artemius openly professed his faith in Christ and fearlessly defended Christianity, even before the emperor himself. Enraged by his bold confession, Julian ordered his arrest and subjected him to severe torture. Despite the intense suffering he endured, Saint Artemius refused to renounce his faith. He bore every trial with patience, courage, and complete trust in God. According to tradition, he was miraculously healed while imprisoned, a miracle that further strengthened his reputation for holiness. Julian made one final attempt to force him to offer sacrifices to the pagan gods, but Artemius remained unshaken in his devotion to Christ. He was ultimately condemned to death and received the crown of martyrdom through beheading. The Church commemorates his memory on October 20.
