Short life of Saint Gregory Palamas
Saint Gregory Palamas was born in 1296 in Constantinople into a devout Christian family. He lost his father at an early age, as he had already embraced the monastic life, and Gregory was raised with a strong education, distinguished for his learning and intellectual ability. Although he had the opportunity for a prominent secular career, he chose instead to dedicate his life to God. He withdrew into monastic life, living in obedience, prayer, and ascetic practice, spending time on Mount Athos and in other hermitages. Later, he settled in Thessaloniki, where he was ordained a priest and continued his ministry through spiritual teaching and pastoral work. Saint Gregory faced many trials and theological disputes, as he defended the teaching of the Church concerning the relationship between God and humanity. He taught that humans may participate in the grace of God not in His essence, but through His divine energies that is, through the grace that enlightens and sanctifies. Despite opposition and hardship, he remained steadfast in his faith and continued to guide and instruct the faithful. His life was marked by struggle, prayer, and spiritual service until his repose. The Church commemorates him on November 14.
