Saint Luke the Evangelist was one of the most important figures of early Christianity. He was born in Antioch in Syria and worked as a physician. Educated and intellectually gifted, his life changed when he encountered the preaching of Christ and embraced the Christian faith. He later became a close companion of the Apostle Paul and one of his most faithful collaborators. He traveled with Paul across many regions, assisting in the spread of the Gospel and supporting the early Christian communities, remaining by his side even during times of persecution. Saint Luke is best known as the author of the Gospel that bears his name, as well as the Acts of the Apostles. Through these works, important events in the life of Christ and the development of the Apostolic Church were preserved. His Gospel places particular emphasis on the Virgin Mary, which is why tradition often refers to him as the “Evangelist of the Theotokos.” According to ecclesiastical tradition, he was also the first iconographer, believed to have painted the earliest images of the Virgin Mary. In his later years, he continued his missionary work in various regions. Tradition holds that he was especially connected with Thebes in Boeotia, where he completed his earthly life. The Church commemorates Saint Luke on October 18.
