Hand painted icon of Saint Matthias the Apostle made in Mount Athos, on natural wood. The icon is delivered in a wooden box.
The number twelve among the Apostles is not coincidental but profoundly symbolic, representing completeness that serves the ultimate purpose of continuing the redemptive work of the Messiah. Following the betrayal and death of Judas Iscariot, Matthias was chosen to replace him and restore the number of the Twelve Apostles. In the Garret, the eleven disciples, together with the Virgin Mary and other faithful followers of the Lord, cast lots between Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias, praying: «Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen 25 to take over this apostolic ministry» (Acts 1:23-26). After the casting of lots, Matthias was added to the apostolic circle. Later, he preached the Gospel in Ethiopia, where he was martyred while other traditions associate him with Jerusalem. The Apostle Matthias is first mentioned in the opening chapter of the Book of Acts. His memory is honored on August 9.
