Theotokos Pregnant represents the protection and care of all pregnant women and families who haven’t had children yet. The prototype of this icon has been known since the 11th century; however, it is one of the rarest depictions of the Theotokos in Orthodox tradition. In this rare iconography, Theotokos is depicted in a state of pregnancy after the Annunciation. She is positioned between two angels who protect and care for her, holding a red veil. The Pregnant Virgin Mary touches her belly with the Divine Infant, Jesus Christ. The Synaxis of the Virgin Mary Pregnant is celebrated on September 25th.
