The Dormition of the Virgin Mary is one of the most important feasts of the Mother of God in Christianity and is celebrated on August 15th. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary peacefully fell asleep, and three days after her burial, her incorruptible body was taken up into heaven. Before her repose, the Theotokos prayed on the Mount of Olives and then returned to her home to prepare for the heavenly life, as she had been informed by the Angel of the Lord. There she gathered her relatives and friends and revealed to them the words of the Angel: «Thus says your Son: it is time for Me to take My Mother to Myself. Therefore, do not be troubled, but receive this message with gladness, for you are passing into immortal life». Her Son, who conquered death, became the Forerunner of His Mother into eternal life. The Assumption of the Virgin marks both the resurrection and the ascension, signifying union with eternal life and victory over death.
