At the Holy Monastery Grigoriou, the coastal monastery of Mount Athos, is found the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary Palaiologina. The elder fathers of the monastery recount that this icon has performed countless miracles.
The miracle of the fire in 1761 AD
One of the most significant miracles of the Theotokos Palaiologina occurred during the fire of 1761 AD. At that time, the entire Katholicon of the Monastery was utterly destroyed by the flames, yet the miraculous icon remained completely intact.
The icon of the Virgin Mary Palaiologina was found amid the ashes, at the spot where it still remains to this day. It is placed on the left column of the main church and faces towards the south.
Why the icon was renamed ‘Virgin Mary Palaiologina’
It is said that the icon was originally named ‘Virgin Mary Hodeghetria Pantanassa,’ but since there were other holy icons with this appellation, it was renamed ‘Palaiologina’.
The name derives from the donor, Lady Maria Asanina Palaiologina of Moldavia or of Mangup, who was the second wife of Prince Stephen III the Great. On the silver covering of the icon is engraved a small golden inscription: “Deesis of the pious lady Maria Asanina Palaiologina, Lady of Moldovlachia.”
