A Brief Life of Saint George
Saint George is one of the most beloved saints of the Orthodox Church, widely honored for his courage and unwavering faith in Christ. He lived during a time when Christians faced severe persecution under the Roman Empire and did not hesitate to offer his life for his faith. He was born in Cappadocia around 275 AD and grew up in a Christian family. Upon reaching adulthood, he chose a military career in the Roman army. Gifted and brave, he quickly rose to a high rank due to his abilities and discipline. However, when the emperors demanded that all citizens worship the pagan gods, George refused to compromise. He openly declared himself a Christian, fully aware that this confession would cost him his life. Despite enduring severe torture, he remained steadfast in his faith without wavering. He was ultimately martyred by beheading in Lydda (modern-day Lod) in Palestine. The Orthodox Church commemorates his memory on April 23. When this day falls during Holy Week, his feast is transferred to Bright Monday.
