A Brief Life of Elder Joseph the Hesychast
Elder Joseph the Hesychast, known in the world as Frangiskos Kottis, was born in Paros in 1897 into a poor but devout Christian family. From a young age he worked to support his family, yet he also carried within him a deep spiritual search and longing for God. Gradually, he withdrew from worldly life and turned toward monasticism. In 1921 he arrived at Mount Athos, where he sought spiritual guidance in the practice of prayer and the ascetic life. Over time, he devoted himself entirely to prayer, fasting, and silence, even retreating to more isolated places in pursuit of greater spiritual struggle. A small brotherhood of disciples gathered around him, whom he guided with strict yet fatherly care, placing particular emphasis on the Jesus Prayer (inner prayer of the heart). In his later years he lived at New Skete on Mount Athos, where he reposed in 1959 on the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos. His spiritual legacy continued through his disciples and had a profound influence on modern Athonite monasticism. The Orthodox Church commemorates him on August 16.
