Short life of Saint Theodore Tyron
Saint Theodore Tyron came from the region of Amasea in Pontus and lived during the time when Christians were undergoing severe persecutions, around the late 3rd and early 4th century. From a young age, he showed a strong military disposition and therefore joined the Roman army as a recruit, which is why he is called “Tyron” meaning “recruit”. He was strong, courageous, and quickly became known for his character and bravery. Although he lived in an army that worshipped idols, he kept the Christian faith alive in his heart. He did not hide it when the moment of truth came, even knowing it could cost him his life. At some point, when he was ordered to sacrifice to the idols, he refused with courage. He did not try to escape or justify himself, instead, he stood firmly in what he believed. This stance brought him into conflict with the authorities. He was arrested and severely tortured in an attempt to force him to change his mind. However, he did not waver. In the end, he was led to his death, remaining faithful to Christ until the very end. His memory is celebrated on February 17.
