Excellent heather and arbutus honey from the Holy Cell of Saint Nicholas in Karyes, Mount Athos. The fathers offer us pure natural honey, rich in nutrients, from the Garden of Virgin Mary.
Erica Manipuliflora Honey is mostly produced in the area of Giovanitsa, but also in the entire Mount Athos.
Erica Manipuliflora Honey has a strong taste, a characteristic fine aroma and a special color, which in the beginning is greenish, while during the winter it becomes dark brown or reddish like cognac. It is collected from September to November (a very rich flowering period for the plant), but there are also years that the plant is not produced at all. For this reason, but mainly for its properties, the demanding consumers, who are aware of this fact buy this honey wherever and whenever they find it.
In France Erica Manipuliflora Honey is considered to be one of the best honeys, along with the Chestnut and Lavender Honey. The French produce the famous French gingerbread only with this honey.
Arbutus honey is produced in the protected forests of Mount Athos and comes from the honeydew of the strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo & Arbutus andrachne). It is a special and unique product, valuable in the field of traditional therapeutics. It has a characteristic slightly bitter taste and reminds of baked caramel.
The calories found in the honey are less than the ones contained in other honeys, due to its low percentage of glucose and fructose. In the arbutus honey there are autumn flowers that coexist in this honey, such as ivy, rough bindweed, Erica manipuliflora, rosemary etc., and contribute to its aromatic character. The honey has not undergone any treatment or filtration and, therefore, it is possible to contain pollen or small pieces of beeswax.
