Short life of Saint Ephraim of Nea Makri
Saint Ephraim of Nea Makri is one of the most beloved modern saints of the Orthodox Church, known for his martyrdom and for the deep devotion shown to him by the faithful. His life is associated with the 14th century and the region of Trikala. From an early age, he chose the monastic life and devoted himself to prayer and ascetic struggle. Later, he lived in a monastery in Attica, in the area now known as Nea Makri, where he continued his spiritual struggle. During a difficult historical period, the monastery where he lived was destroyed during raids, and he was captured. He was subjected to severe torture and ultimately suffered a martyr’s death. For many centuries, the details of his life remained unknown.
His existence was rediscovered when his holy relics were found, an event that strengthened the faith of many people and led to the growth of devotion to the saint. Today, the monastery of Nea Makri is an important pilgrimage site, where many faithful come to pray, considering Saint Ephraim a helper in times of difficulty. The Church commemorates him on May 5, while the discovery of his holy relics is also celebrated on January 3.
