Handmade icon on wood depicting Saint Olga, created according to the traditional Byzantine iconographic style. The icon is rendered with great attention to detail, rich colors, and a gold background. The Saint is portrayed wearing royal garments and a halo, signifying her holiness. In one hand she holds a cross, a symbol of faith, while in the other she holds a model of a church. The background, featuring churches and a natural landscape, enhances the historical and spiritual character of the composition.
Saint Olga was of noble origin and was the wife of Igor, ruler of Kiev. After his violent death in 945 AD, she assumed power herself, governing with wisdom, determination, and administrative ability. In the religious sphere, she was the first prominent leader of the Rus’ to renounce paganism and turn to Christianity. She was baptized in Constantinople around 955 AD, where she received the name Helen, in honor of her sponsor, Helena Lekapene, the wife of Emperor Constantine VII. As a ruler, she devoted herself zealously to the spread of the Christian faith, ensuring that her people came to know the message of the Gospel. During her visit to Byzantium, she was received with great honors, in recognition of her contribution and efforts in support of Christianity. The Church commemorates her memory on July 11.
