Saint Procopius the Great Martyr Small Orthodox Icon

Saint Procopius the Great Martyr was born in Jerusalem and lived during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. His father was a Christian, while his mother followed the pagan religion of the time. In adulthood, he was appointed as an imperial official with the duty of overseeing the persecution of Christians. However, while travelling to assume his office, he experienced a divine vision, he saw a Cross and heard the voice of Christ. This event completely transformed his life, leading him to embrace the Christian faith. When he revealed his conversion to his mother, she attempted to dissuade him. Failing to do so, she denounced him to the authorities. Saint Procopius was arrested and subjected to severe tortures because of his faith. According to tradition, Christ appeared to him in prison and miraculously healed his wounds. Later, he was brought to a pagan temple and ordered to sacrifice to the idols. Instead, he prayed to the true God, and the idols collapsed and were destroyed. This miracle led many people to believe in Christ, including, according to tradition, his own mother. Despite continued persecution and repeated tortures, Saint Procopius remained steadfast in his faith. Ultimately, in 303 AD, he was beheaded and received the crown of martyrdom. The Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Procopius the Great Martyr on 8 July.
