Small Byzantine Icon with Saint Triantafyllos

Short life of Saint Triantafyllos of Zagora

Saint Triantafyllos the New Martyr of Zagora was born in 1663 in Zagora of Pelion, during a difficult period for the Greek people under Ottoman rule. Although he was orphaned at a young age, he did not lose his faith or trust in God, which he had received through the devout upbringing of his parents. In order to support himself, he worked as a sailor. He was known for his hard work, kindness, and integrity, and he openly showed his love and devotion to Christ. This attitude aroused the hostility of some Muslim shipmates, who falsely accused him of intending to abandon his faith. He was brought before the authorities in Constantinople, where he was offered wealth and honors, but also threatened and subjected to harsh torture in order to force him to convert to Islam. However, the young Triantafyllos remained steadfast, boldly confessing that he would never deny Christ. In the end, he was beheaded in Constantinople at only seventeen years of age. The Church commemorates his memory on August 8, the day of his martyrdom.
