Who is commemorated in the portions of the Holy Bread?
On the right side of the Prosphoron, there are nine small triangular sections, from which commemorative particles are taken in honor of the angels and all the saints. These are arranged to the left of the Lamb.
The saints remembered in this part of the Liturgy include the Prophets, the Apostles, Hierarchs, Martyrs, Ascetics, Unmercenaries, the Ancestors of Christ, the Saint commemorated on that particular day, and lastly, the Father of the Church who composed the Divine Liturgy being celebrated.
Though the Second Coming of Christ has not yet taken place and the saints have not fully entered into the fullness of Paradise, they still benefit spiritually from being mentioned during the Divine Liturgy. As time progresses, they receive increasing divine grace, and their glory will be completed upon their entrance into the eternal Kingdom.
In addition, from other areas of the Prosphoron, particles are removed in prayer for both the living and the departed faithful of the Orthodox Church. These commemorative portions are placed in front of the Lamb. Read more information on our blog “Holy Bread Prosphora Seal - the Symbolism of the Offertory”.
