The founder of the monastic state of Mount Athos, Saint Athanasios the Athonite, drawing up the first charter of Mount Athos, states that each monastery must have its own vineyard. Since then, organized viticulture in the Garden of Virgin Mary has been practiced continuously for more than a thousand years until today.
