Saint Eftichios Hagiography on Wood from Mount Athos

Saint Eftichios was a 6th-century saint who served as Patriarch of Constantinople. From an early age, he devoted himself to the Church and followed the path of monastic and spiritual life, showing deep love for God and steadfastness in the Orthodox faith. Throughout his life, he held various positions within the Church and was eventually elevated to the patriarchal throne. His time as Patriarch was marked by serious theological disputes and controversies that troubled the Church and the empire. Saint Eftichios worked tirelessly to preserve the unity of the Church and to defend the Orthodox faith. Because of his firm stance, he came into conflict with imperial authority and was eventually deposed and sent into exile. Despite this hardship, he did not abandon his beliefs or compromise his faith. After some years, he was restored to his patriarchal throne and continued his ministry with peace, wisdom, and pastoral care for his flock. He became known as a man of great endurance, who remained unshaken through trials and suffering. Saint Eftichios reposed peacefully in 582 AD. The Church commemorates him as a saint on April 6.
