Silver icon with Apostle Matthew the Evangelist. Handmade silver icon on natural wood, made with 925ο silver with local 22K gold plating. The natural wood used for the synthesis of the icon is beech (fagus) from Mount Athos, a wood that is receptive to aging techniques that give the appearance of vintage to the wood, without altering the depicted image.
The depictions of faces, hands, halos or other representations are depicted in excellent quality and clarity silkscreen with "vivid" colors. The silver frame of the icon is held by nails to resemble the original icons. On the back side, the icon has a small metal ring made of horseshoe nails so that it can be hung.
A Brief Life of Apostle Matthew the Evangelist
Before becoming a disciple of Christ, Saint Matthew the Apostle, also known as Levi, lived in Capernaum, where he worked as a tax collector (a publican) for the Roman authorities. This profession was generally despised by the Jewish population of the time, as it was associated with collaboration with the occupying power. One day, while he was sitting at the tax booth, Jesus Christ passed by and called him to follow Him. Without hesitation, Matthew immediately responded to this divine call, leaving behind his former way of life and following Christ. He became one of the Twelve Apostles and accompanied the Lord throughout His public ministry, witnessing His teachings, miracles, Passion, and Resurrection. Following the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, Saint Matthew devoted himself to the proclamation of the Gospel, travelling to various regions to preach the word of God and bring many nations to the Christian faith. Saint Matthew is traditionally regarded as the author of the first Gospel of the New Testament, in which he presents the life, teachings, miracles, Passion, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, with a particular emphasis on fulfilling Old Testament prophecy. According to Christian tradition, he ended his life as a martyr in Ethiopia, where he bore witness to the Gospel until the end. The Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Matthew the Evangelist on 16 November.
