Short life of Saint Seraphim of Sarov
Saint Seraphim of Sarov is one of the most beloved saints of the Russian Orthodox Church and one of the greatest ascetics in the history of Orthodox Christianity. He was born in Kursk, Russia, and was baptized with the name Prokhor. From his earliest years, he showed a profound love for God and a deep longing for the spiritual life.
As a young man, he entered the Monastery of Sarov, where he spent many years in obedience and spiritual formation before receiving the monastic tonsure. There he devoted himself wholeheartedly to prayer, humility and ascetic discipline. He was later ordained as a deacon and then as a priest, but soon withdrew into the wilderness to embrace an even more rigorous life of solitude. Living alone in the forest for many years, he dedicated himself to fasting, silence and unceasing prayer, seeking complete communion with God.
Saint Seraphim is revered as one of the greatest hermits of the Russian Church, renowned for his humility, holiness, and extraordinary spiritual gifts. After returning to the monastery, he became a spiritual father to countless people. He welcomed all who came to him, hearing confessions, offering comfort and guiding the faithful with fatherly love and compassion. He is especially remembered for his celebrated teaching that "the true aim of the Christian life is the acquisition of the Holy Spirit," a saying that has become one of the best-known expressions of Orthodox spirituality. Saint Seraphim reposed in the Lord in 1833 while at prayer. The Orthodox Church commemorates him on January 2.
