Hand carved encolpion on boxwood, which is inserted in a walnut wood frame, depicting Saint Seraphim of Sarov. This monastic handwork is made by the monks at the Holy Skete of Saint Demetrios on Mount Athos.

Saint Seraphim of Sarov was born in Kursk, Russia in 1759. At a young age he went to the Sarov desert to live an ascetic life. He was ordained a deacon and later a priest. He became known for his spiritual admonitions and miracles. Saint Seraphim of Sarov celebrates on January 2nd.
