Wood-carved Engolpion with Saint Athanasios from Mount Athos

Hand carved engolpion on boxwood, which is inserted in a walnut wood frame, depicting Saint Athanasios the Athonite. This monastic handwork is made by the monks at the Holy Skete of Saint Demetrios on Mount Athos.

Saint Athanasios Athonite came from Trebizond from a religious and piety family. He studied in Constantinople and then he moved to Mount Kyminas of Asia Minor to live ascetically. From there he next went to Mount Athos, where he founded the monastery of Great Lavra with the help of Emperor Nikephoros Phokas (963 AD). Saint Athanasios Athonite celebrates on July 5th.
