  • How are Mount Athos woodcarved products made?

Woodcarving is the art of creating relief representations of figures, objects, or decorative patterns on wood. It is a form of decorative art with deep roots dating back to antiquity, and it continues to evolve today through traditional techniques. A special place in Greek tradition is held by the woodcarving of Mount Athos. The monks use specialized tools, great patience, and techniques passed down from generation to generation, producing relief works of exceptional detail and spiritual character. Their motifs are usually inspired by Byzantine tradition, such as vines, crosses, and symbolic depictions of Saints or the Crucifixion of the Lord. Each piece is carved with great care from carefully selected types of wood, such as boxwood or pearwood, which are among the most common choices for the woodcarved items available in our online shop. True woodcarving, as an art form, relies on the traditional handcrafted method. The wood is carved entirely by hand, and the use of carving or copying machines is kept to a minimum. Hand carving reveals the craftsman’s skill, artistic knowledge, and personal expression. Machine carving, on the other hand, may produce detailed and “perfect” patterns, but these designs tend to be repetitive and uniform, giving the impression of simple decoration rather than genuine artistry. Before beginning their work, the monks of Mount Athos carefully select the wood, ensuring it is of high quality, durable, and suitable for carving. The wood must be thoroughly dried and later stored in a dry environment, away from moisture. They then draw the desired motif onto the wood and proceed to carve it using chisels and knives, working the wood in depth to bring their envisioned patterns to life. Every woodcarved creation you will find in our online store is made with prayer, tranquility, and reverence by the monks, resulting in pieces that radiate spiritual beauty and authenticity.

  • Are there wood carved engolpion with depictions of Saints?

On our website, we offer handcrafted wood-carved engolpion made in boxwood, carefully created at the Holy Skete of Saint Demetrios on Mount Athos. Each engolpion is unique, as the monks carve it entirely by hand, giving every piece its own distinct shape and relief decoration. The designs include various Saints of the Orthodox Church, crafted with remarkable precision and deep respect for Athonite artistry. Boxwood, being a very hard and dense wood, allows for deep, clean, and detailed carving. The motifs vary from piece to piece, sometimes stricter and geometric, other times more curved and intricate, making each engolpion a one-of-a-kind example of Athonite woodcarving. Some of the Mount Athos engolpion you may find include:

      1. A finely handcrafted boxwood pendant depicting Saint Athanasius the Athonite. The Saint’s figure is framed within a relief border decorated with crosses on all four sides, diagonal carved lines, and a gentle curve at the top. The pendant includes a carved loop, allowing it to be worn or hung.

      2. A rectangular woodcarving featuring Saint Joseph the Hesychast, carved with fine lines and shown wearing a mantle and beard. Around the depiction is a frame with relief ornamentation. The natural, light tone of the boxwood is preserved, with no added colors.

      3. An intricately carved pearwood pendant depicting Archangel Michael. This two-tone rectangular piece has a darker outer surface to give the impression of a frame, while the center features a lighter carved depiction of the Archangel. Geometric patterns surround the central image, and at the top, a carved loop allows the pendant to be worn around the neck or hung as a protective token.

      4. A handcrafted boxwood pendant featuring the Holy Mandylion, in an irregular, oval-like shape. The border is carved on pear wood, emphasizing the raised details.

  • Which Saints are depicted on the carved wooden icons, and where are they made?

In our online store, you will find handmade boxwood carved icons, crafted at Mount Athos by monks with great care, respect, and attention to detail. Boxwood is a type of wood suitable for carving, as demonstrated by the icons’ exceptional engravings and unique details. The depictions include Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and important Saints of the Church, all made at the Holy Skete of Saint Demetrius on Mount Athos, faithfully and artfully rendering their spiritual presence, such as:

      1. Saint Nektarios.

      2. Saint Panteleimon.

      3. Saint Joseph the Hesychast, around the icon the vine is carved, a characteristic symbol of the Orthodox faith.

      4. Saint Stephen, in a round shape.

      5. Virgin Mary of Kazan, with two distinctive red beads

  • Where can I find carved wooden buckles?

In our monastic shop, you can find a carved wooden buckle featuring Saint John the Theologian and a carved wooden buckle depicting the Crucified Christ. These are handmade carved Athonite wooden works created on Mount Athos by experienced monks who preserve the art of woodcarving. This particular woodcarving, the wooden buckle, is integrated as a decorative piece on a handmade metal base, which forms part of the monks’ leather belt. It is crafted from high-quality materials and with specialized woodcarving tools that do not damage or wear the wood, ensuring durability for long-term use. The buckles available in our online store are oval in shape, with a thin embossed carved border that highlights the central theme.

  • How do the carved wooden crosses differ from one another?

In our online shop, the carved wooden crosses are divided into two categories, carved wooden crosses and blessing crosses. You will find crosses in various designs and types, some more simple, others more elaborate with detailed carvings. There are both hanging crosses and tabletop crosses, made from boxwood or pearwood, always crafted with special attention to handmade workmanship. Examples of carved wooden crosses include:

      1. Carved wooden cross with the Crucified Christ. This is a handmade wooden cross, carved by hand by monks of Mount Athos, specifically from the Skete of Saint Demetrius.

      3. Hand carved wooden cross, that is, specially designed to be worn on the body, centrally at chest height. In the center of the cross, which is carved, there is a blue stone and around it is carved decoration with Byzantine designs.

Blessing crosses differ from regular crosses in their shape. These are metal or wooden crosses used by priests and monks to bless the faithful. They have a distinctive form and rich decoration that sets them apart from simple crosses. They typically have a large size of 20–25 cm, and the lower part of the cross is shaped to create the impression of a handle, allowing the priest to hold it when blessing.
