Mount Athos Prayer Ropes

The prayer ropes from Mount Athos are blessed from a holy place. At each knot we invoke the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, saying the short prayer "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me". According to the tradition, the origin of the prayer ropes is traced to a monk, who thought of making simple knots in a rope and using it in his daily "rule" of prayer. There are many types of prayer ropes. Some are woven with wool or silk. Others are made with beads, wood, leather, stone or with the fruit of a plant called "tears of the Virgin". The prayer rope is a reminder of the monks' obligation to pray without interruption, according to the command of the Apostle Paul: "pray without ceasing". The main purpose of the prayer ropes is to help us in our prayer to God and His saints.

Frequent Questions & Answers

  • What does the prayer rope symbolize? Why do we wear a prayer rope?

The prayer rope (in Greek ‘komboskini’) has its origins in the early centuries of Christianity, when it was used by monks as a means of maintaining focus during prayer. Over time, it became a standard prayer aid not only for monastics, but also for clergy and laypeople within the Orthodox Church. Every part of the prayer rope carries its own symbolic meaning. The most common material used for weaving prayer ropes is wool, reminding the faithful that they are the “rational sheep” of the Lord. The black color traditionally symbolizes mourning for one’s sins, affirming the belief that no human being is without sin. Regarding the number of knots, the 33-knot prayer rope represents the years of Christ’s earthly life, while the 99-knot rope reflects the number 33 multiplied by the three distinct Persons of the Holy Trinity. Each individual knot is woven out of nine interlinked crosses, symbolizing the nine ranks of the angels. Thus, the prayer rope is not worn as a decorative accessory for the wrist, neck, or finger, but as a sacred tool meant for prayer and spiritual concentration. During prayer, the faithful use a particular method: moving from knot to knot while reciting invocations such as:

      1. “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.”

      2. “Most Holy Theotokos, save us.”

      3. “Saints of God, intercede for us.”

  • How and on which hand should we wear the prayer rope? How is the prayer rope held during prayer?

The way we hold the prayer rope komboskini depends on the purpose of our prayer. When we engage in personal, informal prayer at any moment of the day, the prayer rope may be held either in the left or in the right hand. Using the thumb, we touch each knot one by one, accompanying this movement with the invocation:  “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me,” or  “Most Holy Theotokos, save us.” However, when someone prays according to a specific rule of prayer given by their spiritual father, the prayer rope is held in the left hand, and with the thumb they count the number of knots prescribed by their spiritual guide. Many faithful keep the prayer rope on their left wrist, so that they may freely make the sign of the Cross with their right hand.

  • Can I wear a prayer rope around my neck?

Every prayer rope has a religious purpose and serves as a tool for prayer. In addition to the prayer ropes worn on the wrist, there are also prayer ropes specifically designed to be worn around the neck. Their use does not differ, however, some neck prayer ropes are constructed with more widely spaced knots instead of tightly woven ones. Both types of prayer ropes are available in our online shop. A neck prayer rope-komboskini can also be used in the same way as a traditional handheld prayer rope, allowing the faithful to hold it in their hand and repeat the Jesus Prayer. On our website, you can find neck prayer ropes such as:

      1. Black neck prayer rope, 33 knots, with a cross made of thread and beads available in blue, black, and red.

      2. Black 50-knot prayer rope, loosely knotted, made of synthetic material.

      3. 100-knot woolen prayer rope with thick hand-woven knots, black, decorated with red, black, or blue beads. A similar 100-knot version with thin knots is also available.

      4. Colored neck prayer ropes in eight different shades, with a cross and decorative beads.

      5. Black woolen 300-knot prayer rope, with red beads, ending in a woven cross and a tassel.

      6. Athos-made neck prayer rope, handcrafted by monks of Mount Athos, decorated with a round metal element engraved with IC XC NIKA and a small wooden bead at the end.

  • How was the prayer rope created?

According to tradition, around 320 A.D., when Saint Pachomius founded the first monastery in the Thebaid of Egypt with the support of Saint Anthony the Great, he sought a way to help the monks maintain concentration during prayer and keep count of their prayer repetitions. He therefore prayed fervently for guidance. According to the Church’s tradition, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him in a dream and revealed the method for crafting a tool that would serve this purpose. Thus, the first prayer rope was created essentially in the same form in which we know it today.

  • Why do we pray with a prayer rope?

The purpose for which the prayer rope-komboskini was first created in the early centuries of Christianity remains the same reason it is used by the faithful today. The prayer rope serves as an aid to prayer. During prayer, the believer holds the rope and passes each knot between the fingers. Every knot acts as a reminder to repeat the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.” A prayer rope may be a simple wrist prayer rope or a longer prayer rope.

  • What prayer do we say with the prayer rope komboskini?

As the believer prays, he or she counts the knots of the prayer rope one by one. Each knot represents a prayer. Every knot helps the mind remain focused and free from the distracting thoughts that arise throughout the day. The prayers commonly repeated while using the prayer rope include:

      1. "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on the sinner, Most Holy Theotokos, save us, Saints of God, intercede for us."

      2. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos and all the Saints, have mercy on me, the sinner."

      3. "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a sinner."

      4. The Publican’s Prayer: "O God, be merciful to me, a sinner."

      5. Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos: "Most Holy Theotokos, save us."

      6. Prayer to the Guardian Angel or Saints: "Holy Angel (or Saint [Name]), intercede for me."

      7. Prayer for the departed: "Grant rest, O Lord, to the soul of Your servant."

  • What should I do if my prayer rope becomes damaged or breaks? What should I do with a broken prayer rope?

The main reasons that cause a prayer rope to wear out or even break are frequent use, lower-quality thread, wrong knitting or improper care. Many people become anxious when this happens, thinking it is a bad sign. However, the Orthodox Church does not support such superstitions. In fact, Saint Paisios the Athonite once said: “A prayer rope breaks when there is a battle with the demons. It is a sign of spiritual struggle. Do not be upset. Get another one and continue!” If your prayer rope breaks, do not throw it away. Treat it with reverence,  you may burn it respectfully, or return it to a church or monastery. On our online shop , you can find a selection of high-quality, handmade prayer ropes-komboskini tightly braided by the fathers of Mount Athos, offering greater durability so they can be worn daily without worry.

  • What should I do with a stretched-out prayer rope? How can I tighten my prayer rope?

After extended use, some prayer ropes may lose their original shape and become stretched. In such cases, you can attempt to tighten it yourself by carefully reworking the knots with your fingers, or you can seek help from someone experienced in making or repairing prayer ropes, who knows the proper technique to restore it.

  • Why are most prayer ropes black?

Most Orthodox prayer ropes are traditionally black because the color symbolizes mourning for one’s sins, reminding the faithful that no one is sinless.” It serves as a quiet call to repentance and humility. Additionally, black color is associated with simplicity, modesty, and sobriety, virtues central to Orthodox spiritual life.
