Saint Gerasimus of Kefalonia Byzantine Icon in Grooved Wood

Saint Gerasimus Notaras is one of the most important saints of the Orthodox Church and the patron saint of the island of Kefalonia. He was born in 1509 in Trikala, Corinthia, into a family of good social standing and education. From an early age, he showed a strong faith and love for God and chose to dedicate his life to the spiritual path. In order to deepen his spiritual life, he traveled to major monastic centers of Orthodoxy, including Mount Athos and Jerusalem. There, he lived a life of prayer, asceticism, and humility, and was ordained a priest, serving the Church with devotion. He later visited various holy places, offering spiritual support to the people who approached him for guidance and encouragement. In 1555, he settled in Kefalonia, in the area of Omala, where he founded the Monastery of the New Jerusalem. There, he lived for many years in simplicity and strict ascetic discipline, guiding nuns and the faithful, and helping people through his teaching and prayer. He became especially beloved for his humility and holiness. He reposed on August 16, 1579. His body was found to be incorrupt, a sign considered to reflect divine grace. Today, he is commemorated on August 16 as a wonderworking saint and the patron and protector of Kefalonia.
