What is “Mousa” and why are they called so?
A “Mousa” is a natural sponge that comes from the bottom of the sea. This specially processed sponge is called “Mousa” because the priest uses it to clean the Disk and collect the “pearls”, the small pieces of the body of Christ that may have fallen and places them with respect and care in the Holy Chalice. Furthermore, the mousa has a symbolic character as it symbolizes the sponge with which Jesus Christ was watered with vinegar during His Crucifixion. In our online shop you can find ecclesiastical sponges, that is, the processed form of the sea sponge, in three sizes suitable for ecclesiastical use.
