A Brief Life of Saint Nektarios of Aegina
Saint Nektarios of Aegina, born Anastasios Kefalas in 1846, was born in Selymbria, Thrace. From an early age, his life was marked by hardship and constant movement, as he was required to support himself at a young age. At fourteen, he moved to Constantinople, where he worked, and later travelled to Chios, where he spent several years serving as a schoolteacher. During his time in Chios, his life gradually took a spiritual turn, as he became increasingly drawn to the life of the Church. Eventually, he embraced monasticism and was later ordained to the clergy. After completing theological studies in Athens, he went to Egypt, where he held important ecclesiastical positions and was eventually elevated to the rank of Metropolitan of Pentapolis.
Despite his ecclesiastical dignity, Saint Nektarios endured unjust accusations and suffering, which eventually led to his return to Greece. There he devoted himself to education, preaching and pastoral care, especially among young people. Later in life, he withdrew to the island of Aegina, where he founded a small monastery and lived in humility, prayer, and asceticism until his repose. He fell asleep in the Lord in 1920, and over time became one of the most beloved modern saints of the Orthodox Church. Many faithful continue to testify to his intercessions and miracles, attributing to him great spiritual assistance even after his repose. The Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Nektarios of Aegina on 9 November, while his relics are also celebrated on 3 September.
